How we review camping and emergency gear
Every guide answers the same practical questions and tells you where each answer comes from.
The questions we answer for every product
- Weight and pack size The weight and packed size the manufacturer states, and whether they suit how you carry it: on foot, by car or stored at home.
- Rated conditions The season, temperature and water resistance ratings as the manufacturer states them, and the standard behind them where one is named.
- Power and runtime Battery capacity, runtime on each setting, how it charges and which fuel or batteries it needs.
- Setup and use How long setup takes according to the manual, how many people it needs and the manufacturer’s ventilation and usage instructions.
- Repair and storage Warranty, spare parts and repair options, and how the manufacturer says to store it, its batteries and its fuel between trips or until it is needed.
Where the answers come from
We read manufacturer specifications, manuals and warranty terms, check retailer listings for current models and prices, and look at independent tests where they exist. Each guide lists its sources with the date we checked them.
Research and hands-on testing
Most guides compare products from research. When we have tested a product ourselves, the guide says so and shows what we did. We never describe a test we did not run, and we do not copy customer reviews.
Images and videos
Every image is labelled as our own photo, a chart from real data, a licensed image or an illustration. AI illustrations are never used to show what a real product looks like, and videos with AI-generated visuals say so.
Keeping guides current
Each guide shows when it was last updated and when prices or details were last checked. We revisit guides when models, prices or subscription terms change.
